Welcome to the Carolus Quinto website. Passing through traditional maritime know–how and techniques is our main goal. We also put a lot of emphasis on sportsmanship and team spirit and try to display this when representing our home city of Ghent on international regattas.
The crew of Carolus Quinto have all been recruited from Sea-Scout group "De Wilde Eend". Thus, all crew members have significant experience in sailing and rowing. To become a crewmember you have to be aged between 15 and 25. The crew consists of 20 enthusiast youngsters, from which thirteen are being selected for each race.

Like any other Bantry Bay Yawl, the Carolus is a very labour intensive boat. With less than nine crewmembers, sailing is not an option. The crew has to be perfectly well trained since one small mistake could have serious consequences. The masts for example have no fixed shrouds. Halyards are being used to take over this function. While tacking, the sails have to be lowered and the gaff should be changed to the other side of the mast. After hoisting the sail again, the halyard has to be attached to the other side of the boat as well. If the trimmer starts pulling the sheet one second too early, there is a great chance the mast will fall down.
For both the "Atlantic Challenge" and the "Défi des Jeunes Marins" the crew should be of mixed gender. That the latter fact posed no problems for the Carolus crew was shown during the Défi 2000 in Douarnenez. In their first competition ever the CQ ended up fifth in the final ranking. Knowing that the day before the first regatta was actually the first time the Carolus was under sail made this result something worth celebrating.

In the summer of 2002 the CQ crew was confronted with the strength of some of the other teams for the first time: the Atlantic challenge in Rockland, Maine (US). The adventure ended with a tenth place out of thirteen competitors. In 2004 the Carolus struck back and finished second in Wales (Atlantic Challenge) and first in Toulon (Défi).
July 2006 was, again, a busy month for the renewed crew. In Genova (Italy) the competition was very hard but the CQ worked itself up to a fourth and respectful place. During the fëtes maritimes in Douarnenez (Bretange, France) The team is also participating in an anual regatta in Marseille where they won over the past three years.
